Daylilies – Photography

The daylilies seem to be doing great even though the hard rains have hurt everything else.

Heavy dew on flowers – Photography

I arrived at the Arboretum at 6am just before the sunrise and found heavy dew covering the flowers. The resent storms had not helped the roses, but I found a few nice flowers in the upper section that looked nice. Most of the time I use a 70-200L with extension for closeups of flowers, but today I decided to try an extension on a 17-40L and found that it worked good. It seemed to give me more dept of field, but required me to get very close. (2-4 inch)

Wild Flower – Photography

While looking at the weed patch behind the garage, trying to decide if I want to clean it out, I ran across these small flowers. I’m not sure if they are a wild flower or weed, or maybe a combination of both, but I thought they were pretty enough to get the camera out and maybe leave the weed patch to grow. 🙂  They are not much larger than a dime, but viewed up close remind me of dayliles.

Abstract – Photography

We have been getting so much rain and wind the flowers are stressed out and really looking bad, so again I turn to the leaves. This time though, I’m putting the zoom to good use by ZOOMING!

Rose Leaves in Rain_ Photography

Today makes 4-5 days of rain this week and the rose are showing signs of stress. They are starting to drop petals from all the wind which made finding nice ones this morning harder than normal. But as I walked around the Arboretum I noticed that the rain and heavy overcast had brought out the colors in the leaves.

Red Rose in Rain- Photography

Red Rose with rain drops

Photographed this rose early today in the rain. Sky was starting to lighten some and made for nice light. The hardest thing about shooting in the rain is focusing with a plastic bag over the camera and the fact you look really stupid. 🙂

Yellow Roses

I would say this is not the best photo I ever took, but it was the hardest to get worked out.

Roses – Photography

Yelllow Rose- Lexington Arboretum

We have been really busy the past week. Jeane is working every spare minute on painting and I have been getting some wholesale orders ready to go out. We have two shows coming up in Florida in about ten days, so there are a lot of last second things popping up. Add all this to several hundred pieces that need to be matted and shrink wrapped and it seem like there is no time for anything else.

Vintage Flowers #3- Photography

Sandstone Rose blend

Here are a couple more photograph’s that are two photo’s, one of the flower and the other of texture, blended together. The more I work with this the more possiblities I see, each one triggering idea’s for the next. We spent  the day hiking at Raven’s Run, a large nature preserve along the Kentucky River. While hiking down to the cliff’s, we snapped 100’s of photo’s of different texture to use.  So needless to say I am going to be playing with this for a few more days.

Vintage Rose- Blending of two photo's

Blending of two Photograph's

I’m finding the blending of photo’s to get a vintage look not only open’s up many avenue’s to follow, but increases the knowledge base. Yesterday I spend 8-10 hours  reading and putting into practice, layer mask, how and where to use them. Gradient mask, adjustment layers, the learning seems to never end.  Deciding what and where different parts show through requires you to move from technical, the camera, to making artistic judgement’s on how the final photo will look. This is something most photographer’s do without thinking as they look through the viewfinder, now with this second step, I’m finding it require’s more thought.
